Chicago-based DJ Terry Hunter curated this playlist to showcase the sounds of house music in 2023.

This innovative approach quickly caught on in the clubs of Chicago, leading to an explosion of creativity that produced some of the most iconic tracks in dance music history. The shift from underground to mainstream for Chicago House Music began in the late 1980s. As the genre grew in popularity, it started to crossover into mainstream culture and become more widely accepted. The sound was embraced by a larger audience, including many music lovers who had previously not heard of the genre. This allowed producers and DJs to reach a wider audience and gain greater recognition for their work.

It casts a light on a lot of artists and DJs and impresarios that the “one sentence summary” of house music history which has proliferated (especially post-Beyoncé) leave out of the picture. Early pioneers and influences of Chicago House Music include DJ’s such as Frankie Knuckles, Larry Heard, Marshall Jefferson, and Ron Hardy. These DJs took inspiration from Disco, Funk, and Soul music to create a unique sound.
